The Internet hosts an increasing number of artistic works that reflect the phenomenon of sound, but how can the features of a social platform such as Twitter be used to establish a discourse centered upon it?

 

The Twitter-based artist in residence program @twIn_sonora is pleased to announce the launch of its 2nd edition, to be held during In-Sonora’s 10th International Interactive Art & Sound Show (Madrid, 2018). This initiative consists of the development of artistic residencies for visual art on our namesake Twitter account. Among the projects received, a maximum of five will be selected by a jury, after it has assessed how well each project adapts to the characteristics of the social network Twitter and how well it links with any expressions or concepts related to sound.

 

Here are some of our objectives and motivations:

 

• To encourage artistic experimentation in alternative digital spaces such as Twitter.

• To produce and give visibility to experimental artistic work, whose main theme is sound.

• To increase the production of procedural, open-ended works.

• To generate opportunities for interactions between the virtual community and the artist.

• To create a meeting space for creatives.

• To establish a voluntary, long-term relationship with participating artists.

Twitter imposes a series of conditions that can be as constraining as they are liberating when it comes to facilitating ingenuity and executing creative projects. The 140 character limit is one of these conditions that directly informs how Twitterart manifests. In the face of these requirements, such rigidity can stagnate creativity or, on the contrary, stimulate the development of significant content and initiatives. In addition to written languague that, for example, enables the publication of poetic works, one can also share images, links that redirect users to other multimedia content and more importantly, interact with other users across Twitter. This fact makes Twitterart a broad concept that encompasses a multitude of possibilities in terms of attitudes and results, ones that in the case of @twIn_sonora we hope are conceived in the service of sound.
